How Does Antair Spam Filter Work?
At its core, the performance of a spam filter depends on its ability to recognize an e-mail message as spam. Whatever other features a particular spam filter may provide are just icing on the cake, and often prove to be useless unless the spam filter is capable of consistently classifying an incoming e-mail message correctly.
Spam filters can use various techniques to accomplish this task. Some rely on manual rules defined by the user which classify an incoming e-mail message based on characteristics of the subject line or the name of the sender. Other spam filters use regular expressions to isolate distinct words or phrases in an attempt to determine whether the message should be flagged as spam.
Some of the more advanced spam filters use statistical techniques such as Bayesian classification, which relies on calculations of probability of the occurrence of certain words in order to distinguish between legitimate and illegitimate e-mail.
The problem with using any of these techniques in isolation is that spam is ever-changing. Spammers adapt their techniques constantly in order to trick spam filters into classifying their messages as legitimate mail. Even Bayesian filters are not immune. Spammers routinely use a technique known as Bayesian poisoning to fool spam filters using only statistical techniques. You may have seen these spam messages yourself -- they often take the form of an e-mail with a large amount of seemingly legitimate and benign text (often gathered from books or newspaper articles).
Antair Spam Filter uses a hybrid solution of statistical Bayesian and heuristic techniques in order to classify and isolate spam. As such, it brings the benefits of statistical Bayesian filtering, along with other integrated rules and algorithms to catch even the most elusive spam messages. Whether the spam message is filled with obvious pornography links or with large sections of text describing an elaborate stock scam, Antair Spam Filter is smart enough to recognize it for what it is.
When an e-mail message arrives in your BlackBerry inbox, the Antair Spam Filter kicks into action without ever bothering you. All of your specified e-mail, domain, and term whitelist and blacklist entries are consulted, and, if needed, the Bayesian spam engine analyzes the contents of the message. If the message is determined to be legitimate e-mail, it is left alone. If, however, the message is identified to be a piece of spam, it is immediately removed from the BlackBerry. The entire process takes a fraction of a second, and a copy of the filtered message is kept safely in the SPAM BOX of Antair BlackBerry Spam Filter. We designed Antair Spam Filter to be fast, small, smart, and effective.
